Smartphones - Beyond Voice to Information and Entertainment
    By Sam Subramanian

Investments in shares of wireless technology companies and wireless service providers have been particularly profitable in the post-dot com era. The wireless industry is in a sweet spot of the technology space. Bountiful business opportunities exist as wireless usage continues to increase in both developed and emerging markets. And driving this usage higher are new products such as smartphones whose capabilities are being augmented by the deployment of third generation (3G) wireless networks.

    Feature-Rich Smartphones.

Smartphones are more than mobile phones. A smartphone is a mobile phone with built-in functions of a personal digital assistant. Smartphones pack a diverse range of features and functionalities into the handset that makes them a mobile information center and entertainment device for the user.

Smartphones commonly include features such as web browsing, e-mail, and multimedia capabilities. Certain models have enough horse power to run complex software applications such as enterprise customer relationship software and car navigation programs.

A full-featured QWERTY-type keyboard, MP3 player, and Geo Positioning Systems capability are becoming common among higher-end smartphones. Instant messaging is a cool feature making its way into the mainstream.

Smartphones, A Growing Segment of the Handset Market.

Smartphones represent a small, yet rapidly growing, segment of the handset market. According to Strategy Analytics, smartphone sales at 17.5 million units in 2004 accounted for 3% of the worldwide sales of 684 million handsets. However, this represents a significant jump from the 8.2 million units sold in 2003.

The demand for smartphones is projected to grow rapidly in the coming years. By 2009, the number of smartphone units sold is estimated to reach 125 million or 16% of total handset sales worldwide. This implies a 48% compound annual growth rate in smartphone unit shipments over the 2004-2009 period.

Smartphone Early Adoption Led by Asia and Europe.

Adoption of smartphones has been particularly rapid in Asia and Europe. The aggressive deployment of advanced wireless networks in these regions has encouraged early adoption of smartphones.

The Asia Pacific region currently accounts for about 37% of global smartphone sales with South Korea and Japan being leaders in smartphone usage. The European market accounts for 27% of global smartphone sales. Analysts expect smartphone sales in Europe to exceed sales in the Asian market in the coming years. North America s market share in smartphone sales was expected to reach 25% by the end of 2004.

Nokia, the 800 lb. Gorilla of Smartphones.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is by far the dominant global smartphone manufacturer. The Finnish company is currently estimated to command half to two-thirds share of the global smartphone market.

Nokia recently introduced its feature-rich Nokia 7710 smartphone in Europe and Africa. The wide-screen Nokia 7710 smartphone includes a full Internet browser, an integrated music player, a camera with 2x digital zoom, and a FM radio. One of the nifty features of the Nokia 7710 smartphone is its ability to make weblogging mobile. Users can post pictures and text from the Nokia 7710 smartphone directly to the web through the moblog client.

Nokia is also expected to introduce the Nokia 3230 smartphone in the first quarter of 2005. The Nokia 3230 smartphone features a video recorder and Movie Director that will allow 1 hour of video to be captured.

Nokia is now increasingly looking at software licensing deals to help differentiate itself from its competitors. Nokia has recently signed licensing deals with Macromedia and RealNetworks. Nokia is also said to be working on handsets that will receive wireless television feeds.

    Smartphone Investment Implications.

The increasing adoption of smartphones augurs well not only for Nokia but also for other smartphone manufacturers like palmOne (Nasdaq: PLMO) and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM). palmOne recently introduced the GSM edition of its Treo 650 smartphone. Research in Motion recently released the latest model in its BlackBerry 7100 series, the 7100g.

The incorporation of additional features and functionalities that make smartphones the portable information center and entertainment device of choice has bullish implications beyond just manufacturers of smartphones.

Wireless service providers like Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) should see their average revenue per user being buffeted with increasing use of value-added services that smartphones enable.

Then too, the increasing adoption and usage of smartphones will require the rollout of 3G wireless networks in earnest, translating into business opportunities for wireless network equipment providers such as Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERICY).

Is Your Company Data Secure? - Blackberry Hacks Are Here
    By R Welch

There s a new route into your company s secure data. It s the Blackberry PDA. A hacking program has been developed which exploits the relationship between the Blackberry itself, a company s internal server and the network connection to which both are attached. The hacking program works because the data tunnel between the Blackberry and the server is encrypted. Intrusions can t be detected because the protective systems, such as firewalls, exist at the perimeter of the network. This begs the question of all business owners whose employees use a Blackberry: Is your company data secure?

The hacking technique is successful because there are very few companies equipped to detect and intrusion from the inside of the network. Another reason for hacking success is the fact that companies don t see the Blackberry as a potential attack vector. The Blackberry is not your normal handheld device. It s a continuously running code machine that s always on and always connected to your internal network. It has constant direct access to whatever you give it access to and most company structures allow complete access to the internal network for their employees who use Blackberries.

BBProxy is the name of the Blackberry hacking program. It can be loaded on the Blackberry either physically or via e-mail as a Trojan horse. Once loaded, the Blackberry will call back to the hacker s system and open communication channels between the hacker and the internal network of the company. This process runs in the background behind the safety of the company s firewall scanning for hosts with vulnerabilities in security and is generally undetected.

Recently, an ad on eBay sold a Blackberry “AS IS” for approximately $15.00. While the device didn t come with a cable, synching station, software or manual, it did come with something far more valuable. This Blackberry came with a stockpile of corporate data all there for anyone to read as soon as the device was turned on. Many employees are insufficiently trained concerning security issues for the electronic devices they use on a daily basis.

Company data is stored as attachments on a server, rather than the Blackberry itself, so if a device is ever lost or misplaced someone could easily read sensitive documents. The Blackberry lacks encryption capabilities and relies instead on users locking the device with a password. Unfortunately, anyone with hacking abilities could discover the password and let themselves into the network.

The beauty of the Blackberry is that it s a do it yourself type of device. It basically allows you to take your office with you wherever you go and not be caught unprepared or without the correct documents of a given meeting. However, for individuals and companies who handle and funnel much of their business dealings through these wonderfully useful devices, both internal and external server security must be taken into account.

Downloading Ringtones and Photos for Your Cell Phone
    By Victor Epand

Motorola offers mobile users the option of sharing, downloading, as well as accessing cell phone features through a laptop and/or desktop computer. Highly recommended by customers, Motorola Phone Tools are considered a very important aspect for those who enjoy listening to music, chatting online, manipulating photos, etc.

It s simple there are two different ways to connect the Motorola cell phone to other devices. First, the Bluetooth feature, which provides a way to connect and exchange information between devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, desktops, printers, digital cameras and even video game consoles. Besides Bluetooth, the Universal Serial Bus, or the USB cable, can as well be connected to other devices.

Before using either or connectors, the Motorola Phone Tools CD ROM is needed in order to start the program. Once the program is saved and stored to the PC, it ll be a whole lot easier to access phone tools on the desktop.

There are several ways to get ringtones unto those phones.

Firstly you can purchase the datacable and the software (Mobile Phone Tools) for the phone. You can get this at any phone outlet or even online. With this you can then create and transfer images, wallpapers, movies and mp3 ringtones to and from the phone.

Secondly you can purchase the Bluetooth Dongle (USB Adapter), and then use this to transfer your images and ringtones from your PC to your phone and vice-versa. This will all be done using the bluetooth wireless technology.

Thirdly you can go online and find some free ringtones that you like and then have them transferred to your phone directly off the internet using WAP technology.

You can also even get the ringtones texted using MMS to your phone or you can even have them emailed to you.

These are the best options for you to choose from. There are more but work with these for now. Oh and don t get led on by these Network people that want to make extra money.

There are two ways of doing this. The first is using Bluetooth, which is a wireless connection and the second is using the data cable and Motorola Phone Tools (MPT). I would recommend that you use the data cable because it is very thorough and it has a simple user interface.

The data cable you can purchase at any phone store or even on Ebay. As for the software MPT, here is a link that you can use to download it.

If they ask for a password to open the file after you have downloaded it then you can try this:
    Password: Freshwap.com

When you copy and paste the link, you will be directed to rapid share. Then you scroll down the page to the button free located at the bottom of the second column. Click on the free button and then you will go onto another page. This page should have a timer counting down. This is how long you have to wait before you can download the file. When the timer expires, then you can enter the 3 character confirmation code that they give you, and then hit download and that s it.

You will also need WINRAR, that is the software they use to zip the files. This you can get anywhere on the net but you can check: www.downloads.com (Alexa) if you don t already have it.

Future Phones Will Be Tailored To Fit Lifestyles
    By Dan Cavalli

Faster, easier to read, and specifically packaged for your unique interests and lifestyle.

Oh, yes calls will be cheaper, too.

That s what s on the horizon in mobile phone technology, and that future is likely to happen very soon. The U.S. has historically lagged far behind the rest of the industrialised world in mobile phone service advancement, but that s poised for change.

The enthusiasm, and ease, with which people of all ages, income and education levels have embraced the abundance of features their mobile phones offer them has caught the industry by surprise.

The next generation of mobile phones will continue the recent integration of PDA-type features, what the industry calls smartphone functions– Calendar, appointment, phone book abilities– Along with enhanced word processing, Internet and email capabilities.

To handle enhancements like those, the next mobile phones will feature larger onboard memory, bigger VGA screens for better resolution, and easier to use keyboards. The new G4 technology, already rolling out in the Japanese market, will also allow a much faster downloading speed– Over three times the amount of data per second of current G3 phones on the market!

But perhaps the biggest change will be how these features will be packaged for the marketplace– Not everyone needs the same advanced functions. The industry plans to respond to this by packaging specific lines tailored to meet customers specific interests and needs.

    Popular Culture Fans

We re talking those who like to download music and video, and movie and TV fans– These are fun, splashy features that the industry loves to play-up, and much of this technology is already on the market.

The enhancements will be 480×640 VGA touchscreens for better picture clarity, and greatly increased download speeds to handle video-on-demand, “cable” newscasts and videophone calls. Add to that, onboard cameras with clarity that rival most people s digital cameras– but more on that later.

    Portable Offices For Professionals

These are mobile phone packages specifically designed around the needs of such professionals as doctors, financial services professionals, business executives, and sales reps. It s here that we will see smartphone technology at its state-of-the-art finest.

The need to type easily, and to read documents in the field tops the list of needs of busy professionals. That means, larger, easier to use QWERTY keyboards, the higher resolution VGA touch screens, and office software with greater capabilities. It also means that the ability to access information on the Internet, and to download large documents, will have to approach the capabilities of a personal computer.

Naturally, these advancements will greatly impact the physical design of these phones, so future smartphone models will be larger, like the popular BlackBerry, Palm Treo and HP iPaq models.

    Reach Out And Touch Someone

Many primarily use their phones for communication– With friends, relatives, and people they ve met on the Internet. Google s built-in Blogger software is tailored for mobile subscribers like these. This will allow users to search for blogs, write and submit posts, and instantly post photos that they ve snapped on their phones.

And these photos won t be what we re used to. Picture clarity will jump from the current 1.3-megapixels to as high as 5-megapixels, thanks to recent advancements in tiny, tunable-focal-length liquid lenses and better zooming (4x) capabilities.

The camera features on current phones are already so popular with consumers that by 2008 camera phones are expected to account for 90% of all digital camera sales!

    Wi-Fi and VoIP

Are consumers willing to shell out more dollars for all these enhanced capabilities? After all, a 5-megapixel digital camera alone is not inexpensive.

The industry is betting they will. And their confidence may lie in the sharp price drop expected in the cost of placing cell phone calls.

Voice over IP (VoIP) technology enables consumers to place phone calls over the same networks used for Internet traffic– All the user needs is a Wi-Fi high-speed Internet connection (called “WiMAX” in mobile lingo.).

What this means cost-wise is that consumers will be able to place an unlimited number of calls without having to pay by-the-minute– They ll only have to pay the monthly subscription to their VoIP provider.

The industry bets this mix of cheaper phone bills and enhanced features centered around your individual needs and lifestyle, will be a winning combination that you ll eagerly jump on.

Internal Vs. External Antennas on Cell Phones
    By Victor Epand

Here are some thoughts about internal and external antennas on cell phones. Is it true that external antennas picks up and holds a signal better than internal antennas? I was just wondering about the signal strength and quality in the phone, that s about it.

Well, the thing is that technology has come thus far that we no longer require the age-old antennas that the old Nokia s used before. An internal antenna would work just as fine as an external antenna, which however means that you are purchasing a good model phone and not some really cheap model.

A Motorola V3x has an internal antenna, which works wonderfully great. I don t even have any problems with reception, which is amazing!

I feel that an internal antenna is superior to the external antenna in wireless devices. An external antenna can easily get broken or cracked and then your phone is basically useless or should I say ruined. Many of the manufactures have now gone to internal antennas and the devices are much better than the old external antenna devices. In looking at today s devices, the Samsung and LG phones still seem to have external antennas and the Motorola devices are now all internal.

The Nokia and Sony devices also have internal antennas. All of the PDAs now have internal antennas, including the newer Treos. Sound quality is based on the phone model, itself, but as far as getting and retaining signal strength, I think you will find that the phones with internal antennas, such as the Razr, several of the Sony models and the PDAs are better than those devices with external antennas.

I have looked a several external antennas for my cell phone. (I have a Motorola V120) I noticed that the antenna had a smaller coaxial cable with it. My question is would it be possible to attach my cell phone to the TV antenna or would this make a problem? I can not pick up anything where I live. There are main power lines not to far from my house. I think that prevents me from receiving a signal. If this would not work will the other external cell phone antennas do anything?

Televisions operate in a different frequency range than cellular phones so hooking up to a television antenna will not improve your signal. If you have absolutely no signal at your house and have to travel a distance before you pick up a signal the prospects are grim. If you have some kind of signal outside of your house then an external antenna should help you. In addition to an external antenna an inline amplifier would strengthen your signal ever more.

I have an LG phone using Verizon service. In or outside of my house my signal varies from 1 to 4 in strength even when I m perfectly still. I don t think the little flat antenna boosters that go behind the battery are working. I mean, my calls are dropping like flies. It s ridiculous!

My advice is for you to try doing a *228 (send) option 2 to your phone. You should consider doing that once a month to update the most recent tower list. However, if that doesn t work, then you should think about purchasing an antenna that does work with your phone. The only thing is that the antenna would need to be plugged in.
