Selling Prepaid Phone Cards - How Lucrative Is It?
    By Vanessa A. Doctor

A lot of individuals today wish they could start their own businesses. Selling prepaid phone cards would make a nice start to a viable business proposition. Getting into this business should be quite easy and could convert your dreams into reality. However, there is a very wide gap between truth and fiction. Your goals, whatever the may be, can only be achieved with meticulous planning.

As a home-based, online or standard entrepreneur, you will need to have a plan to avoid pitfalls, to achieve your goals, and to establish a profitable business venture. As a phone card seller, you need to create a viable business plan to avoid stumbling blocks, achieve your goals, and build a profitable home business, such as selling prepaid phone cards.

Find Out What Services Your Distributor Would Offer

Before you start selling, it s important to inquire from your service provider if they provide customizable business management, or web-based platforms to the wholesale agents, where you could:

    - Set your own rates for their customers.

    - Create different rate plans with different billing increments (rounding to seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute etc.), impose connection and disconnection charges, monthly fees and other parameters. Check if billing can be done in a local currency.

    - Credit and charge amounts to/from accounts

    - Configure postpaid or prepaid billing types for the customers

    - View the billing and errors for each account

    - Configure speed dial numbers or services for the customers

    - Generate pin codes for calling cards

The Mechanism Of Prepaid Phone Cards

Prospective retailers should have a wider grasp of the business they are going into. They should know that prepaid phone cards come in different dollar denominations, or face values, which are often between $5, $10 or $25 per card. They may also be packaged in minutes, such as 30, 60, or 90 minutes per card.

The cards available often charge different per-minute rates. Before you sell cards, ask your distributor the details about how many minutes of calling time in the cards. With some cards, when you buy more minutes, you get a better per-minute price. Instead of minutes, some operators indicate how many “units” are on the card.

A unit equals one minute calling time for calls placed within the continental United States. On calls from territories like Puerto Rico and Guam and to other countries, you may be charged more than one unit for every minute you are on the phone. Knowing these details helps in properly informing the buying public about the characteristics of prepaid call cards.

    Phone Cards Use VoIP Technology

The main reason why phone cards are able offer very affordable rates to call local or overseas is because of the unique technology used. Service providers selling phone cards use a combination of VoIP (Voice over IP) and regular lines to get a fairly good balance between call quality and low prices. In addition, since the cards are pre-paid, which means you pay in advance for the specified talk time, other charges are reduced, like the ones for collection charges or debt retrieval.

Oct. 31 (Bloomberg) — Google Inc. is in talks with Verizon Communications Inc. and Sprint Nextel Corp. about developing mobile-phone software and services, two people familiar with the discussions said.

Google, owner of the world’s most-popular Internet search engine, may build a phone operating system or applications, said the people, who wanted anonymity because the talks are private.

“It portends a pretty interesting combo,” said Mike McGuire, an analyst at Stamford, Connecticut-based research firm Gartner Inc.

Google shares passed $700 today on speculation the company would extend its dominance of Internet advertising into wireless devices. For Verizon and Sprint, ranked second and third in U.S. mobile-phone customers, new programs may help bolster revenue from data services. Google’s help would also give them an edge against larger rival AT&T Inc., the exclusive U.S. service provider for Apple Inc.’s iPhone.

Verizon Wireless spokesman Jim Gerace confirmed the companies have talked, declining to comment further. Sprint spokesman James Fisher and Google spokeswoman Erin Fors both refused to comment. The Wall Street Journal reported the talks yesterday, saying Google would make an announcement in two weeks.

    Record High

Google, based in Mountain View, California, climbed $12.23 to $707 at 4 p.m. in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares have risen 54 percent this year.

New York-based Verizon, which co-owns Verizon Wireless with Vodafone Group Plc, rose 71 cents to $46.07 on the New York Stock Exchange. Sprint, based in Reston, Virginia, climbed 6 cents to $17.10.

An operating system would give Google another way to profit from sales of mobile phones, which outsold personal computers by more than 4-to-1 last year, according to Gartner.

Google said in July that it may bid at least $4.6 billion to buy wireless airwaves at a U.S. federal auction. The company might work with smaller service providers to create its own network. Verizon Wireless also has said it plans to bid in the auction.

Google has developed versions of its maps, calendar and messaging software for wireless devices. Last month, it adapted its AdSense software for mobile Web pages, letting marketers show ads relevant to the sites’ content. In January, Google began offering search services on mobile phones from China Mobile Ltd., the world’s biggest wireless carrier by users.

    New Customers

Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt noted the importance of the mobile-phone market at a press briefing in May, before Google’s annual shareholders’ meeting.

“Many people in the next five to 10 years — their first experience in the Internet will be through a mobile phone,” Schmidt said.

About 1 billion Web-enabled phones will be sold by 2011, according to IDC, a research firm in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Verizon and Sprint are counting on revenue from data services, such as text messaging and song downloads, to offset slowing revenue from phone calls.

Verizon Wireless subscribers spent $10.59 a month, or 20 percent of their bills, on data services in the third quarter. That was an increase of 43 percent from the same period last year.

A Google phone may give Verizon and Sprint a competitor to the iPhone, which combines a Web-surfing phone with Apple’s iPod music player. AT&T, the largest U.S. wireless service provider, began offering the iPhone June 29.

AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook didn’t return a call seeking comment for this story.

Verizon added 1.7 million subscribers to long-term contracts in the third quarter, compared with AT&T’s 1.2 million. Sprint lost 337,000 monthly subscribers in the period.

Sprint and Google announced an agreement in July to offer search and mapping services to Sprint customers on a new high- speed wireless network. Google will pay Sprint under the terms of that deal.

Firefly vs Migo - Choosing a Cell Phone for Your Kid
    By Barry Nagassar

This article is designed to provide a review and comparison between the two leading kids cell phones: the Firefly and the Migo from LG (the TicTalk will not be discussed). Designed to equip consumers with the latest reviews this article will provide a brief analysis about the pros and cons regarding these two cell phones. Let s get started….

The Firefly has been out for a while, mid-2005 exposed the Firefly plans and towards Q3 of 2005 the Firefly was coming onto US markets namely on the Cingular network. The GSM enabled handset appealed to the kid audience through parents by offering basic features on a simple phone. The added security appealed to parents hence the rush for other manufacturers to produce a similar device. Lo and behold, LG was next inline offering their version called the Migo. The LG VX 1000 Migo is a CDMA enabled handset and operates on the Verizon network.

This article doesn t look at the practicality of the devices, but compares the two against each other which device should you buy if you had the choice. Since both operate on different networks this means if you re already with a carrier your choice may be restricted. As stated, the Firefly operates on the GSM network (T-Mobile, Cingular, Rogers), and the Migo operates on the CDMA network (Verizon, Sprint, Telus? or Bell?). The thing with GSM phones is you could potentially purchase it unlocked and activate it on any GSM network provider of your choice. You cannot do the same with CDMA. If you re purchasing for the first time and will choose between the two networks (Cingular and Verizon in the States) then the rest of this review will help your decision making.

Weighing in at a paltry 56 grams, designed to accommodate smaller hands, the Blue and Pink Firefly measures 1.75 x 3.46 x .79, weighs 2.12 ounces, offers up to 2.5 hours of talk time, and up to 100 hours of standby a bare bones 850/1900 MHz GSM cell phone that permits parents to limit outgoing calls to certain numbers and also sports mom and dad buttons for quick dialling.

Conversely, the green Migo measures 1.77 x 3.42 x 1.07 weighs 2.4 ounces, offers 4 hours of talk time, but unfortunately no prepaid options are available with this phone. Network: CDMA High-Speed Data: 1xRTT remember, neither phones have Bluetooth, cameras, or any additional features common on regular phones. The phone also shows 5 buttons for quick dialling and emergency dialling.

Pro: Firefly. With the Firefly you can limit who calls your child based on a pre-programmed list. The Migo does not offer this security feature so essentially junior can give the number to friends and get them to call. The Migo only permits 5 programmable outgoing call numbers while the Firefly list enables 20.

Pro: Migo. The Migo works with hearing aids. Also, the second antenna is for eventual GPS support, where that goes we won t know, but it is an additional feature on the Migo.

Con: Both phones are designed to give the bare phone essentials. However, they are candybar styles, which means the Firefly antenna is located within the phone unit and does not protrude out. This means cellular frequencies are closer to the brain. The question now revolves around how early is too early for exposing kids to cellular frequencies on a regular basis? On one hand you don t want to risk your child s health, on the other hand scientific research is still inconclusive when it comes to cell phone radiation . The juror is still out on this one, be your own judge regarding the health impacts. The Migo s SAR rating is 0.915 w/kg when held up to the head, below the legal limit of 1.6 w/kg and also below the Firefly s level of 1.322 w/kg. The Migo antennas are outside of the phone as well.

Conclusion: Both phones offer pretty much the same features and are built in the same way. If you re on a network already and just want to add a kid phone then it s Firefly for GSM and Migo for CDMA. Simple. If you re getting a phone on a new network then it seems the Firefly wins by an edge. This article does not investigate the durability of the phones because they are both so new (the Migo especially), nor does it look at the sound quality. Both phones are near equal in this respect, however, the Firefly seems to be built stronger and the Migo appears to have marginally better sound in preliminary tests. Remember, a teen will not enjoy these phones for their basic nature, but your young child may benefit from the added security. Firefly seems to offer more in this security detail. So for now, points to Firefly, barely.

    A Guide to VoIP
    By Bhupinder Kahlon

What is VoIP? Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the ability to transmit voice over the Internet to either a receiving computer, telephone or even a mobile phone. VoIP phone is becoming the popular worldwide telephone service for both consumer and the business communities. VoIP works by using a network technology known as Packet Switching Network whereas landline telephones use the Circuit Switching Network. This is referred to as the Public Switched Telephone Network.

What s the difference between VoIP normal phones?

The main difference between Packet Switching and Circuit Switching, is that Packet Switching uses (data) or Packets and sends them over the Internet while Circuit Switching is accomplished by using electrical circuits to make a telephone connection. Circuit Switching is like the old switchboard operators, frantically trying to connect the right caller with the receiver. Packet Switching is used to transfer data all across the Internet including E-mail. Packet Switching converts audio formats into data packets and transmits them over the Internet, then reassembles them on the other person s phone or computer in real time. By using a Broadband Internet Connection, microphone and speakers a conversation can take place similar to traditional telephone.

VoIP phones have been round for sometime, but increases in technology it is becoming increasingly popular. Several years ago many applications were available offering some form of free VoIP phone service. Majority of these have gone or now charge a fee for the use of their service as VoIP phone provider. Moreover, VoIP is developing higher standards of quality every day, and it has proved that it is a viable force for telecommunication for the future.

Who is providing VoIP phone service?

Telephone and Internet service provider companies are expanding to allow for monthly VoIP phone services. Companies such as AOL, Verizon and Sprint have VoIP phone offerings. Recently eBay has joined the ranks of VoIP phone service providers by purchasing skype VoIP software, with its vast membership base the VoIP message will soon reach the man on the street.

    What s special about VoIP?

Instant messaging programs such as MSN massager have been using VoIP technology for years. Now, most of these messaging programs come with voice enabled features which allow you to call a member of your buddy list. By using a microphone and speakers, you will be able to converse anywhere in the world, by VoIP and your Instant Messaging program.

With instant messaging VoIP incorporates different areas into one program. With your voice enabled programs, you can hook up a digital camera, web cam and use video, while you are speaking on your microphone and listening to on your speakers, and you can type back and forth with your chat program. You could even write an email at the same time. The potential for VoIP phones use is nearly limitless.

VoIP has this unique ability to integrate many forms of telecommunication applications into one package can handle data, audio, video, E-Mail, and web based applications simultaneously. This makes VoIP an incredible boost to business world and provides a cost effective choice of telephone service.

VoIP phone service providers are increasing in popularity with many people discovering all of the benefits available to them by switching from using their land line telephones to VoIP service. First, VoIP phone services costs significantly less than standard phone service, and this is a great attraction for bringing in new customers. Many VoIP phone plans will let you make unlimited long distance calls or provide you with a plan for very inexpensive rates. Many of the features that are often included for a fee with traditional phone service are often included for free with VoIP services. Features such as Call Waiting, Call Block, Call Forwarding, Conference Calling, Voice Mail are usually charged as extras by the traditional phone companies but these are usually free with the VoIP phone packages.Another benefit to VoIP services is that you can usually keep your existing phone number, or allow you to select a new area code. The means if you select an area where most of your friends and family live, a call to you will be treated as local call. For a remote business VoIP service can give the perception of having multiple office locations.

What s the future for VoIP?

AT&T Dumps Analog Service - Only 3G Now
    By L. Winslow

If you have an AT&ampT cell phone which is old, it is time to upgrade and get a new phone, because they are shutting down their analog service. From all that I am reading in the Telecom Trade Rags it seems the cost to run two-systems is not profitable for them.

The analog system costs 5 times the cost to run in maintenance and the number of subscribers that have switched over makes it no longer profitable. The transition is almost completed and they have already begun shutting down those old cell towers. Meanwhile pressure in the industry to implement 3G+ and 4G is coming too.

The newer technologies will allow for phones with personal GPS and all sorts of other cool stuff. And they have to do this to keep up with the competition. Luckily, if you are a long time customer with AT&ampT they will practically almost give you a new Motorola Razor Cell Phone, it s like $39.00 with rebate says Sheryl at a Nashville Cingular Suburb Store.

Other companies are attempting to match these prices and things are very competitive so if you need a new phone and do not mind signing up for 2-years of service, you will be paying about the same price and you can get a phone with digital camera, video, IM, email and all sorts of bells and whistles, so it appears that now is the time to bust a move and get yourself a new cell phone and you won t be alone, nearly every school kid and skateboarders has a new phone too.

    L. Winslow is an Economic Advisor to the Online Think Tank, a Futurist and retired entrepreneur. Currently he is planning a bicycle ride across the US to raise money for charity and is sponsored by http://www.Calling-Plans.com and all the proceeds will go to various charities who sign up.

Internal Vs. External Antennas on Cell Phones
    By Victor Epand

Here are some thoughts about internal and external antennas on cell phones. Is it true that external antennas picks up and holds a signal better than internal antennas? I was just wondering about the signal strength and quality in the phone, that s about it.

Well, the thing is that technology has come thus far that we no longer require the age-old antennas that the old Nokia s used before. An internal antenna would work just as fine as an external antenna, which however means that you are purchasing a good model phone and not some really cheap model.

A Motorola V3x has an internal antenna, which works wonderfully great. I don t even have any problems with reception, which is amazing!

I feel that an internal antenna is superior to the external antenna in wireless devices. An external antenna can easily get broken or cracked and then your phone is basically useless or should I say ruined. Many of the manufactures have now gone to internal antennas and the devices are much better than the old external antenna devices. In looking at today s devices, the Samsung and LG phones still seem to have external antennas and the Motorola devices are now all internal.

The Nokia and Sony devices also have internal antennas. All of the PDAs now have internal antennas, including the newer Treos. Sound quality is based on the phone model, itself, but as far as getting and retaining signal strength, I think you will find that the phones with internal antennas, such as the Razr, several of the Sony models and the PDAs are better than those devices with external antennas.

I have looked a several external antennas for my cell phone. (I have a Motorola V120) I noticed that the antenna had a smaller coaxial cable with it. My question is would it be possible to attach my cell phone to the TV antenna or would this make a problem? I can not pick up anything where I live. There are main power lines not to far from my house. I think that prevents me from receiving a signal. If this would not work will the other external cell phone antennas do anything?

Televisions operate in a different frequency range than cellular phones so hooking up to a television antenna will not improve your signal. If you have absolutely no signal at your house and have to travel a distance before you pick up a signal the prospects are grim. If you have some kind of signal outside of your house then an external antenna should help you. In addition to an external antenna an inline amplifier would strengthen your signal ever more.

I have an LG phone using Verizon service. In or outside of my house my signal varies from 1 to 4 in strength even when I m perfectly still. I don t think the little flat antenna boosters that go behind the battery are working. I mean, my calls are dropping like flies. It s ridiculous!

My advice is for you to try doing a *228 (send) option 2 to your phone. You should consider doing that once a month to update the most recent tower list. However, if that doesn t work, then you should think about purchasing an antenna that does work with your phone. The only thing is that the antenna would need to be plugged in.
